Why your iPhone no longer charges: the common causes

An iPhone that no longer charges is not always a seriously broken iPhone. Here is what we find most often, from the simplest cause to the most serious:
- Worn cable or charger : a damaged cable or a non-compliant charger is enough to block charging.
- Dirt in the connector : dust and pocket lint pack into the bottom of the port and prevent contact.
- Worn or bent charging connector : after months of plugging in, it no longer holds the cable or no longer passes current.
- Battery at end of life : the iPhone shuts off quickly, charges very slowly or shows a percentage that jumps.
- Water damage or oxidation : moisture damages the port and the internal contacts, sometimes weeks later.
- Charging circuit on the board : the port and the battery are fine, but the charging chip no longer responds.
To try before you come
A few quick checks sometimes save a trip:
- Try another cable and another charger, preferably from a known brand.
- Plug into a wall outlet rather than a computer USB port.
- Force restart the iPhone.
- Look at the port with a torch: if you see dirt, do not scrape it with a metal object, as you risk damaging the contacts.
If nothing changes, bring it in: we clean the port properly and test the charging under control.

iPhone dropped in water or very damp
If the iPhone got wet, do not plug it in: the current can make the damage worse. Switch it off, do not dry it in the oven or with a hair dryer, and bring it to us quickly. The chances of repair are limited, but a diagnosis tells you what can still be saved.
