PC won’t start: diagnosis at the IC Computer Services workshop

  • No light, no sound: power supply, cable, battery or motherboard.
  • It turns on then off again: overheating, memory or faulty power supply.
  • It starts but Windows won’t load: drive, damaged system or an update that went wrong.

To check before you come

  • Check the outlet, the power strip and the power cable.
  • On a laptop, unplug it and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug back in.
  • Unplug the USB peripherals.
  • Note any error messages or beeps: they help the diagnosis.

Avoid repeated attempts if the screen shows a drive error: it can make data loss worse.

Before you come to the workshop: what to know

For a quick diagnosis, bring the PC with its power cable (or the laptop with its charger). Note what you see at startup (no sign of life, beeps, black screen, error message) and whether the fault appeared after a storm, an update or a move. These details help us target the fault from the start.

For a desktop PC, bring the tower only, without screen or keyboard. If your files are important, say so before any handling.

It is the most frequent lead on a desktop PC, but not the only one. We test before replacing anything.

Will I lose my files?

Not necessarily. The drive is often intact. We avoid any risky handling before explaining to you.

Is there a warranty?
