- Backlight off: keyboard component or cable.
- Trackpad that no longer clicks: worn mechanism, or a swollen battery pushing it up.
- Keyboard that heats up or types by itself: liquid or short circuit.
To try before you come
- Restart the MacBook and test the keys in a text application.
- Connect an external keyboard: if it works, the problem is hardware.
- Check that the trackpad is active in the settings.
- Avoid cleaning with alcohol or water: a liquid makes the fault worse.
